What is the 'OASIS TRICK' for USMLE? Important: Starting August 2007, all USMLE score reporting will be electronic, making the OASIS trick obsolete and unnecessary. So read this only to amuse yourself ;-)
This 'trick' refers to 'fooling' the ECFMG guys and finding out for yourself whether you passed your CSA or not before those slow pokes update the site - Black Magic ? WooooHoooo ...
Important !! Before you try this trick:
Obviously you should have already taken the Exam AND Your score report date should be updated on the Score report section on OASIS. You can check that by clicking on the 'USMLE/ CSA score reporting information' link seen on the left after you login to OASIS through ECFMG.org (screenshot provided below).
If you try the OASIS trick before the score report date is updated, it will allow you to reapply and that DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING, only gives you a cold sweat !
Though it is called the "Oasis Trick" - you ain't fooling no Oasis man..you actually do it through IWA , if you know what I mean...
(Note: The same 'trick' also works with Step 1 and Step 2 CK )
1. Goto www.ecfmg.org and click on IWA.. which is for applying online..
2. Login and then click 'Begin New Application"
3. Select Step 2 CS
4. Now here's the catch - if you have already passed then the system will not allow you re-apply (logical ! aint it ?) If you have failed (God Forbid), you will be able to apply without a problem..
If you passed, then the following message (in red) ,or similar, should appear when you try to reapply:
"Our records indicate that you have already passed Step 2 CS or the ECFMG Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA®). The USMLE Policy on Reexamination generally does not allow applicants to retake Step 2 CS if they have already passed this exam or the ECFMG Clinical Skills Assessment. There are, however, certain exceptions to this policy:
Exception #1: Applicants who have already passed a Step or Step Component may retake that Step or Step Component if they need it to comply with a time limit of a medical licensing authority for completion of all Steps or a requirement imposed by another authority recognized by the USMLE program for this purpose.
Exception #2: For the purposes of ECFMG Certification, ECFMG requires that applicants pass those USMLE Steps or Step Components required for ECFMG Certification within a seven-year period. Effective June 14, 2004, applicants must pass Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS within a seven-year period for ECFMG Certification; this new seven-year requirement applies to applicants whose earliest USMLE passing performance that is valid for ECFMG Certification took place on or after June 14, 2004. Prior to June 14, 2004, ECFMG required that applicants pass Step 1 and Step 2 CK within a seven-year period for ECFMG Certification; this prior seven-year requirement continues to apply to applicants if their earliest USMLE passing performance that is valid for ECFMG Certification took place before June 14, 2004.
Exception #3: According to ECFMG policy, passing performance on administrations of the ECFMG CSA that took place before June 14, 2001 is valid for three years from the date passed for the purpose of entering programs of graduate medical education (GME). If an applicant's CSA pass date expired before entering a GME program, the applicant must revalidate this date by passing a subsequent exam, if he/she wishes to enter such a program. An applicant whose CSA pass date has expired and who plans to enter a GME program may take Step 2 CS for these revalidation purposes."
Yet, you may see an new application number assigned to you - dont worry about that one - it's for those people who qualify for the exceptions mentioned in the message. Simply log out of OASIS and celebrate ! But again, please do the OASIS trick only after your score report is released.
How do I Check if my results are out yet ?
After you login to OASIS, check out the 'USMLE/ CSA score reporting information' link - if your CS score release date is seen on it - the the OASIS trick is correct for sure :-) The screen-shot below tells you where to look for this - click on it to enlarge it...

If your score-reporting date is BLANK and you try the OASIS trick - either it simply allows you to reapply OR this is the message that you get :
"Our records indicate that you are already registered for this Step or Step Component. You may not apply for a Step or Step Component if you are already registered for that Step or Step Component. If you fail or do not complete a Step or Step Component, you may submit another application for this exam, but certain time limits apply when retaking a Step or Step Component. For complete information, refer to Reexamination and Reapplication in the ECFMG Information Booklet and Retakes in the USMLE Bulletin of Information"
This does NOT INDICATE anything about results - it means you gotta wait...
What if it allows you to re-apply even after score report date is updated? ....
Do not panick yet - this
trick works 100 % only for showing you passed - not for indicating that you did not. In other words, supposed it does allow you to re-apply, it does not automatically mean you failed - because at times, it is NOT a reliable predictor of failure. There have been a few instances of students passed despite being able to re-apply. Speaking of false positives....In fact, this happened recently to one IMG, who told us on the USMLE.net forum (June 2006)
So is this a 'trick' - Wish there was a way to enforce a 'pass' status on OASIS - no matter what really the outcome was...Now I would call that a real trick ( if wishes were horses.......)
And after how many days will the official result / score letter arrive home ?
Give it about 4 - 6 business days ..

Post a commentWith all my heart, I really hope this applies to me!!
Thank you for the encouragement!
Good luck !
thank you..this has helped me..
did any one from the observers pass after oasis let you re apply??
Yes ..read quiet a few posts on online USMLE forums..
does oasis trick work if the first time whenu applied to the exam it was a paper application?
the IWA appli said u have already passed, as my oasis was updated a week back.
is this very reliable as i am tensed
Yes it is reliable for passing :-) and does not depend on whether u applied electronically or thru paper - coz eventually ECFMG stores all in the digital format on their databases :-) Do let us know the final result - though I am sure u passed !
hey. do you know if in this year's CS exam u have to do simulated breast, rectal, and pelvic exams?
Dont think so..
like two weeks ago i took cs then yesterday i applied to iwa but it says that i already did the step component what does tha mean
like two weeks ago i took cs then yesterday i applied to iwa but it says that i already did the step component what does tha mean
It does not mean anything until the score release date is updated on OASIS..
hey here, u said u read some on forums where it let them reapply, but then passed with a score in the mail. are u sure they weren't US students? 'cause this trick is supposed to be for FMGs? good site, btw!
I think those were FMGs....But its a rare occurance..
dear digitaldoc
this web site was a great help in my CS exam.
Congrats on great effort
I have few questions.May be you can answer them
I took exam on 16 th may in chicago and ecfmg web site say that reporting period is from June 21-July 19.Is irt possible that i can get result on june 21?or ill have to wait til end of july because i took exam in the last week of May
Secondly If God forbids I fail can i reapply and register within a week after getting the result? or Ill have to wait for some time?I am not sure about this
Finally if i reapply after july 1 can i still get 2007 match.Ecfmg says that it recommends but If we can manage to apply for cs after july 1 and get slot in centre, will it be acceptable for ECFMG
I may look silly asking these questions but please i need advise-really anxious---------------
how long do you have to wait?
Oh my god, I couldn't aplly CS again bcz iwa says i already passed!!!
Ans. 1 gotta wait till the date updates on the score report section - takes anywhere from 6-8 weeks, at times 10 weeks
Ans. 2: Wow...so you made it :-) Congrats..
checked my results using oasis trick, says you have passed.
thanks digitaldoc for all the help you and your site has provided me.
Regarding oasis trick my advice is to check only when your score report date is given. I had a horrible experience when it allowed me to apply few days back but the score report was not updated. later i came to know that my eligibility period had expired and that was the reason it had allowed me to reapply.
hey digital doc are u really sure about this trick , because although my cs score information space is empty i am not getting any such i nfo like u mentioned above infact hey are allowing me to reapply ??
Hi people..i am the article was not very clear - so now i have modified it to make it more clear. If the score report date is not yet updated - it either simply allows you to reapply, or gives you that message saying that you are already registered. Unless the score report date is updated, neither means anything. g/l
When I try: Begin a New Application: USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, and/or Step 2 CS
I get the following error message:
cPageReader.GetExamType error '80004005'
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error ORA-06512: at "AIMS_V2.PKG_IWA_GETS", line 1050 ORA-06512: at line 1 Unable to get exam type(s).
/includes/AppRoutines.asp, line 626
Please tell me what I should interpret of this and what action I should take?
Its a programming error on the website backend database , will be temporary and shud get fixed
Hey,
Just wanted to leave a tip for all those AMGs out there who use your helpful website...the Oasis trick, in my experience, does not work with the NBME site...after my scores were reported as updated, i could still re-apply for the exam...turns out i could re-apply for step 1 as well (which i had already passed.) Got my scores is the mail today and i did indeed pass. So, if you are a U.S. grad and the site lets you reapply, don't worry! it doesn't mean anything...just gotta wait for the results in the mail. Thanks--
Thanks pal ! Shall make that addition to this blog post. G/l to u
Just did the Oasis Trick and I passed. Thanks a Million for your Blog and advice.
Congrats budd !
Digitaldoc,
I would like to thank you for your kindness and generosity in posting these 'tips-n-tricks' for the CS. Honestly, I would not have passed if it wasn't for your website, First Aid and God. Long live 'PAMHUGSFOSS'.
Once again, thank you for the kindness that you have shown us all.
Appreciate your comment Goofybabs ! and Congrats :-)
